From Me to We: An Online OCHS Weekend Retreat
Saturday - Sunday May 23 - 24, 10AM - 4PM EST
As we look forward to emerging from extended isolation, this weekend of study and introspection explores how yoga philosophy and Sanskrit can nurture collective consciousness.
We will be reading and chanting from traditional texts, then discussing their practical relevance in challenging times. According to the Bhagavad Gītā and Yoga Sūtra, a goal of yoga is to alleviate suffering. We will consider this in two different ways that are ultimately one: taking care of the self and the world as a whole.
I am excited to be co-teaching this online retreat with Daniel Simpson, who teaches the popular Yoga Philosophy course for the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies.
Day One will focus on individual study (svādhyāya). We then link this to Day Two’s theme of interconnection and sustaining community (sangha). We will look at a range of traditional readings on these subjects, examining how self-inquiry can be part of a process of reconnecting more harmoniously with one another.
This course is open to all levels of experience with Sanskrit, from newcomers to those who read fluently. Engaging closely with texts from a broad perspective, we will challenge each other to discover new meanings – whether looking at these verses for the first time or the hundredth.
